CULTURAL EXPERIENCES IN NORTHERN THAILAND

We offer a selection of unique cultural experiences that take you to working tribal villages surrounding Chiang Mai where you get a chance to learn about local ways of life and traditions from guides who live in the area.

Northern Thai Foodie Experience

Most visitors to Thailand are familiar with Southern and Central Thai dishes, but Northern Thailand offers a different foodie experience. Traditional Northern Thai dishes evolved under influence from neighbouring countries, Southern China, and various hill tribes that live in the mountains. While there are plenty of cooking classes available in Chiang Mai, our foodie experience goes a step further and introduces you to traditional Northern Thai food as it’s prepared in the countryside. You not only learn some rare recipes, but also discover how ingredients are collected and produced. A hands-on experience that teaches you where the food comes from, and how it’s traditionally prepared and cooked.

Karen weaving class

Weaving is one of traditions that Karen tribe is most famous for. In the past, all Karen women learned to weave and made traditional striped outfits for their families. While it’s still expected that a woman from a Karen tribe knows how to weave, many choose to forego this tradition as they move away from the villages and into the cities. By visiting working tribal villages, we enable the villagers to make a living from their old crafts, and what better way to do it than to pass their knowledge on to others? On this trip, you spend two days learning weaving on a wooden loom and finish a traditional Karen pattern by the end of the class.

Five-day Karen Lover Tour

Karen tribe is the most populous of all hill tribes in Northern Thailand and a lot of Karen communities still live quite traditional lives and sustain themselves by farming. However, many your Karen people are looking for a better life and move to the cities. In order to preserve their culture and give them a viable option to stay in their villages, we organise tours that are guided by the villagers and give our guests a good insight into their daily lives. The money goes to the local communities and gives them an option to stay in the village. This five day tour includes a home stay in the village and gives you an understanding of how villagers farm, weave, and create their traditional crafts.

Tuk-Tuk Driving Experience

Explore Northern Thai countryside and learn about Thai culture by driving a tuk-tuk, the staple Thai vehicle! Not only will you see local villages, waterfalls, farmland, and a Buddhist temple, you will do so while driving your own tuk-tuk. Get a unique insight into a life of a tuk-tuk driver by learning how to drive a tuk-tuk and spending a day on the road in pristine Northern Thai countryside.
